Persuing Truth from the 4th Estate

Truth vs David and Goliath

Posted on Feb 6, 2007

"Truth; you can handle the truth!" or so Jack Nicklson's character Marine Col. Nathan R. Jessep said in the 1992 movie A Few Good Men.  Life is stranger than fiction.  As demented and perverse as Jessep appears in the movie, our world is full of Jesseps and worse those who think there is a Jessep behind every rock.

The truth is, almost every reporter thinks he is Tom Cruise's Navy Lt. Daniel Kaffee, fighting the powerful elite.  Reporters see themselves as being smarter and uncompromising in the pursuit of right.  They are the David to the establishments Goliath.

Most public servants see themselves as wise defenders of the Republic.  They see themselves not as cogs in a bureaucratic machine but as the one true light keeping the bureaucracy on track.  They don't understand why David keeps slinging rocks at Goliath.  For the spear bearers of Goliath do not want to harm anyone they just want to protect David and his people from harm.

From the time of our revolt against England the establishment and the media have been slinging stones and throwing spears at each other for more than 200 years.  Unlike the victorious King David, the only people who are injured in battle are the spectators who are watching the fight.

For too many years I have been both a spear bearer and a stone thrower.  Their have been times when I think I have been successful in hitting myself with a spear and a stone at the same time.  All of which resulted in a splitting headache and the mudding of the truth.

No longer is David a Shepard boy and Goliath may still be a giant but instead of challenging David to battle he covers his head waiting for the next stone to strike him.  It is no longer about truth and accountability it is now just a battle of survivability.

This Blog is named Verum Secuutus, which is Latin for: the pursuit of truth.  My intention is to challenge journalists and those who serve our Republic and release information to the news media to uphold the traditions they purport to swear by.  Reporters believe they are unbiased observers who are not on anybody's side except for the voiceless victims of society.  Defenders of the Republic adhere to the adage of maximum disclosure with minimum delay.

Somewhere along the line both David and Goliath have forgotten why they are at battle.  For them the truth is the battle, they no longer battle for the truth.  Starting today I throw-away my stones and toss away my spears.  I will no longer fight for either side but rather I will use my quill to battle David and Goliath.  For they are no longer the champions of their causes; but they are champions for themselves.

My quill is sharp and my ink is pure.  I have but one master and that master is truth and freedom.  Too many good men have died for the principles this country was founded on to allow David and Goliath to continue to play their games.
